Many Aston Villa fans are discussing Ross Barkley after journalist Gregg Evans tweeted about his impact so far this season.
The Chelsea loanee has had a good campaign as he has managed, on average, 2.4 shots, two key passes and 1.5 successful dribbles per game (WhoScored), ranking him fairly highly when you compare him to his teammates – he’s second for shots, key passes and dribbles. He has also scored four goals and provided one assist, including contributions against the likes of Liverpool, Leicester and Arsenal.
The attacking midfielder has been on the pitch for nine of Watkins’ goals, however, Evans tweet has revealed some stats which show that the defence struggle more with him in the side. It was highlighted that Villa score more and concede more when he plays, whilst they have won six, lost six and drawn one.
The Englishman has definitely provided a lot of attacking quality and taken some of the pressure off of Jack Grealish.
However he doesn’t seem to offer enough defensively, and this is seeing Villa struggle more when he is on the pitch – he ranks bottom among all of Villa’s outfield players for tackles per game, and second-bottom for interceptions (only young starlet Jacob Ramsey is below him). One fan called him ‘inconsistent’ and many started to question his place in the starting eleven.
Here is what Villa fans said about Barkley following the tweet:
“So we are better without him starting then. P9 w5 l2 d2 only 2 extra points in 4 extra games with him”
“Has all the talent Gregg but doesn’t work hard enough when things aren’t going well #lastnight not worth £40 million”
“He has to be dropped simple as that doesn’t deserve to start next game.”
“I think we have to be honest ans admit he’s not offering enough to be starting at the moment. Hoping he’s not got a ‘must start’ clause in his contract”
“Not offering anywhere near enough. Doesn’t want to get back and help, happy to just lightly jog around. If the rumour is true about £40m, villa should definitely be looking elsewhere.”
“If RB doesn’t improve his performances then a permanent move is unlikely. The expected finances involved(transfer fee + his wages) in a move mean it’s fair to expect more from him than he producing at present.RB is talented and has ability but is too inconsistent…”
“Not scapegoating, it’s justified criticism of some woeful recent performances. Been waiting for him to click into gear for seven games now. Should 1000% be dropped for next game”
