Aston Villa: Diego Carlos could be back in April

Diego Carlos in action for Brazil

Aston Villa centre-back Diego Carlos could potentially return from a lengthy injury layoff in April, according to an update from reliable journalist Gregg Evans.

The Lowdown: Carlos out for many months

The Brazilian joined Villa in a big-money move during last summer’s transfer window, with many seeing him as an influential addition at the heart of the defence.

Sadly, Carlos managed just two appearances in the Premier League before disaster struck, with a ruptured achilles seeing him ruled out for many months.

The 29-year-old still isn’t back in action but an encouraging update has emerged regarding him.

The Latest: Return edging closer

Taking to Twitter, Evans said that Carlos will hopefully be back next month, also hailing his ‘outstanding’ rehab sessions:

“Diego Carlos *could* be back for the April fixtures. Vulnerable period in his recovery. Needs at least 2 weeks full training with team. May get a BCD game. Has been outstanding during rehab A big boost for #AVFC when he’s back.”

The Verdict: Focus on next season

This is undoubtedly good news for Villa, with Carlos someone who was described as ‘amazing’ by former Arsenal and Everton striker Kevin Campbell before his move to the club last year.

Even in his two league games before injury, the six-time capped Brazil international impressed, averaging 1.5 aerial duel wins per match, and he is arguably an upgrade on the other centre-backs.

Unai Emery should be looking at next season when it comes to Carlos, however, rather than rashing him back in April and May and risking a further setback in his recovery.

If he can be eased back in, getting a small amount of playing time and then having a full pre-season behind him, he could flourish for Villa moving forward.
