Aston Villa are heading into a demanding conclusion to the campaign.
Sitting third in the Premier League with 11 matches remaining, Unai Emery’s side are firmly in the hunt for a top-four finish.
They are also preparing for a Europa League last-16 showdown with Lille.
However, a midfield injury crisis has complicated matters. Youri Tielemans, John McGinn and Boubacar Kamara are all currently sidelined, leaving Villa short of depth at a crucial stage of the season.
That situation has placed greater importance on experienced squad members — including Ross Barkley — yet his long-term future remains uncertain.
Barkley Tipped for Championship Transfer
According to Football Insider, Barkley is drawing interest from several clubs near the top of the Championship ahead of the summer window.
Although some reports have suggested otherwise, the 32-year-old is under contract at Villa Park until 2027. Even so, a departure at the end of the season has not been ruled out.
Barkley — once labelled “incredible” by former manager Roberto Martinez — has endured an injury-hit campaign but recently returned to action in Villa’s FA Cup defeat to Newcastle. Despite limited minutes, he remains an experienced option in the squad.
Former Aston Villa scout Mick Brown believes a move could materialise if the right offer arrives.
“I think Ross Barkley can still be a valuable asset for Villa,” Brown told Football Insider. “But he has been pushed down the pecking order a little bit with Douglas Luiz coming in, and he’s playing in a position where they’ve got some top options.
“In recent years he’s stepped up and become more of a senior professional,” he added. “He’s showed that experience at Villa and especially showed it when he was at Luton, playing in a bit of a deeper role helping to dictate their play.
“Those performances, and the way he’s played for Villa, have attracted interest from clubs lower in the Premier League and certainly in the Championship.
“They’d be willing to take a chance on him, whether it’s for experience after getting into the Premier League or to help them push for promotion.
“I think that would be the perfect move for him, to use his experience and know-how to help a club improve, rather than being a bit-part player at Villa.”
Whether Barkley departs may ultimately depend on how significant a role he plays in Villa’s run-in. With injuries limiting Emery’s options, his experience could yet prove crucial. But if he slips back down the pecking order once others return, a summer switch — potentially viewed as the “perfect” next step — may suit all parties.
