Aston Villa have been forced back into the transfer market after another major defensive departure, with Unai Emery now needing to find a replacement for Ezri Konsa.
The England international has followed Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans and Lucas Digne out of Villa Park this summer, completing a move to Arsenal for a fee believed to be around £50 million.
Losing a player of Konsa’s quality leaves a significant hole at the heart of Emery’s defence.
With PSR restrictions also limiting Villa’s room for manoeuvre, finding the right replacement will be crucial. And it appears the club may already have a candidate in mind.
Villa Make Contact for Ordóñez
Aston Villa have made contact with Club Brugge over a possible move for highly-rated Ecuador international Joel Ordóñez, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein.
The 22-year-old centre-back is understood to be one of the options Villa are considering as they search for another defender, with an initial approach having been made to the Belgian club.
Ordóñez has developed into one of Club Brugge’s most valuable assets since arriving from their academy side Club NXT in 2023. His progress has also earned widespread praise, with Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig describing the defender as “complete”.
The Ecuadorian has now racked up more than 100 appearances for Brugge, scoring four goals and helping the club claim three major honours, including the Belgian league title in 2023/24.
His rise has also been rewarded at international level. Ordóñez was selected in Ecuador’s 26-man squad for the 2026 World Cup, further underlining how highly he is regarded.
For Villa, the attraction is obvious. They need to replace a key first-team defender, but also want to add a player capable of developing into a long-term asset. Ordóñez’s age, experience and growing reputation could make him an intriguing option as Emery looks to rebuild his back line.
