Aston Villa: Conor Hourihane expected to leave

Aston Villa: Conor Hourihane expected to leave -Aston Villa

Aston Villa midfielder Conor Hourihane is expected to depart the club over the coming weeks, according to Birmingham Live reporter Ashley Preece.

The Lowdown: Hourihane at Villa

The 30-year-old, hailed as ‘underrated’ by Dan Bardell last year, made the move to Villa Park back in January 2017 from Barnsley in a deal worth £3.15m.

Hourihane was a regular in the second tier for Villa and even featured on 27 occasions in the club’s first year back in the Premier League before moving to Swansea City on loan last season.

He almost helped Swansea to the top flight but is now back in the Midlands and played in a secret friendly against Liverpool on Sunday.

The central midfielder has made 150 appearances for Villa in total, scoring 29 times and registering 23 assists, but his days at the club could now be numbered.

Were Aston Villa right to let Hourihane go?

The Latest: Preece’s update

Preece shared a Villa notebook on Birmingham Live on Tuesday morning, where he discussed a number of topics.

One of those was transfers, with the reliable reporter claiming that Hourihane is expected to depart over the coming weeks.

Should he leave the club, a new midfielder could well come in before the window closes at the end of the month.

Villa have made some unusual signings in the past, can you identify some? First up, who is this who Villa landed in 2016?

The Verdict: Right decision

Even though Hourihane has been a brilliant servant to the club, now appears to be the right time to move him on.

He wasn’t included in Dean Smith’s squad on the opening weekend against Watford and is on £30,000-a-week at Villa Park – a fair amount for a player seemingly not in Smith’s plans.

Even if Villa don’t receive a fee for the midfielder who is into the final 12 months of his contract, getting his salary off the books could be handy when it comes to any more potential additions.
