Aston Villa are interested in signing Daniel Sturridge this month, that is according to Bleacher Report.
Journalist Dean Jones reports that the Midlands club are prioritising Chelsea striker Michy Batshuayi but are also keen on Sturridge, with their primary target in two minds about whether to stay at Stamford Bridge or not.
The Villans’ desire to sign a new centre-forward stems from Wesley’s long-term injury, with the 23-year-old ruled out for the rest of the season after doing serious damage to his knee ligament.
Considering that, it is only natural that Smith is looking to do some business this month in that department. Bringing in Sturridge, however, would come with some serious question marks.
With Villa finding themselves in a relegation battle, Smith needs a reliable No.9 who can fire them to safety — history suggests that Sturridge is not that No.9.
There is no doubting the 30-year-old’s goalscoring ability. In 218 Premier League appearances, he managed to score close to 80 goals. However, simply put, his injury record just does not bode well for any potential suitor.
Down the years, Sturridge has proven to be an injury-prone player, picking up an array of injuries at Liverpool, West Brom and now Trabzonspor. If such a player becomes the man Villa end up relying upon for goals in their survival push, then they could find themselves in serious trouble.
If Sturridge is the alternative, then Villa really need to do all they can to secure Batshuayi, who has already shown that he can be the man for the big occasion.
Albeit not a regular starter at Chelsea, the Belgium international has scored some clutch goals for the Blues since joining from Marseille in 2016.
He netted the winner in a 1-0 Champions League win over Ajax back in November and bagged the decisive goal against Atletico Madrid in the same competition a couple of years ago.

He also scored the goal that clinched Chelsea’s fifth Premier League title in 2017 after firing past Villa’s rivals West Brom.
Based on all of that, the Chelsea centre-forward has to be secured over Trabzonspor’s two-time Champions League winner.
