‘Better than Messi’ - Chelsea fans rave over club’s Twitter post

The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern have been waxing lyrical over their French striker, Olivier Giroud, as the target-man was on the scoresheet against the Republic of Ireland last night. France were one of a number of international sides who took to the pitch yesterday evening, and on the Chelsea website, there’s a breakdown of how all of the Blues internationals got on for their countries.

Olivier Giroud’s strike five minutes before the switch of ends was a landmark goal for the 31-year-old as he drew level with Zinedine Zidane in Le Bleus all-time goalscoring table with 31 goals. The Chelsea striker now sits behind only Thierry Henry, Michel Platini and David Trezeguet as the countries all-time leading goalscorer, although he’ll be looking to make up the ground on those above him in the World Cup next month.

The striker, who won the Puskas award for the best goal of 2017, joined Chelsea from direct rivals, Arsenal, in January and has been a well-loved figure at Stamford Bridge since making the short trip across London. The Frenchman managed five goals in 17 appearances for Antonio Conte’s side, although a number of those appearances were off the bench as he looked to find his feet early in his Chelsea career.
