A cheer of relief was heard around the Transfer Tavern late last January when Celtic fans became aware that star goalkeeper Craig Gordon would not be heading south of the border to join Chelsea.
The Scotland international was heavily aligned with the Blues in the run-up to the deadline, with the Premier League leaders seeing him as a good back-up option to Thibaut Courtois.
Alas, the switch didn’t come off and Gordon has spoken to Celtic View (via the Express) about his feelings surrounding the speculation he was leaving Celtic Park, claiming that the whole saga was “mentally draining”:
“These things happen,
“You have to go out there and play through it and continue to do what you’ve been doing.
“That gets you in that position where you’re the subject of a bid.
“It was about doing the job and I’ve had that a couple of times in my career where there’s been talk of changing clubs and bids coming in and having to play games during that time.
“It is mentally draining, but you’ve got to do your job and we continued to play well.”
Gordon is a key component in a Celtic team that could be set for one of the club’s finest ever seasons.
Although they finished bottom of their Champions League group, the Bhoys are unbeaten in domestic football this term, with only two points dropped in the league via a draw at Inverness CT earlier in the campaign and the League Cup already in the cabinet.
The Scottish FA Cup is also in sight with St Mirren waiting in the quarter-finals, so there’s every chance Brendan Rodgers will end his first season at Celtic with three trophies.
