Rafa Benitez welcomed Pep Guardiola and his rampant Manchester City team to St James’ Park last night knowing his side would need an extraordinary performance to halt The Citizens winning run in the Premier League. For the majority of proceedings, Newcastle chose to make life difficult for City as they settled into a condense, deep-lying unit inside their final-third and hoped to produce a moment of magic on the counter-attack.
Considering the frightening form City are in at this moment in time, it is difficult to blame Benitez for adopting such a defensive approach, even if the tactics contributed to a relatively flat 90 minutes of football.
In the aftermath of the evening fixture, the Toon Army took to Twitter to discuss various aspects of the match, and the individual performance of Mohamed Diame in central midfield has proven to be a hot topic amongst the supporters.
Newcastle’s Senegalese midfielder has struggled to cement his place in Benitez’s starting eleven so far this season, but he has begun to enjoy more first-team opportunities of late.
However, judging by the response to his performance against City on Twitter, the majority of Newcastle supporters would rather see him left on the bench or even out of the match day squad entirely in the future.
