The Chelsea fans in the Football Transfer Tavern have mixed opinions on this one…
According to the Evening Standard, John Obi Mikel will not be offered a new deal at Chelsea this season; with the club set to tell the Nigerian that he can leave the club in the January transfer window, should he choose to.
This is significant, of course, as the midfield veteran’s contract expires at the end of the season; meaning that he could leave the club on a free.
The Chelsea fans in the Football Transfer Tavern are disappointed with this, and many still feel that Mikel can do a job for the team. Under Conte, however, he is yet to feature – and with Kante and Matic clearly ahead of him in the pecking order – that does not look set to change anytime soon.
The news will no doubt disappoint Mikel, who last season emerged as one of Chelsea’s most important players. Interm boss Guus Hiddink opted to utilise the Nigerian constantly throughout his tenure, and Mikel proved to be a reliable hand for the Dutch boss.
Last season was his most productive season in years for the Blues, with the 29-year-old midfielder picking up nearly 20 league starts.
Our landlord thinks that Mikel will have no issue finding a new club…
