Chelsea are still 'working' on a deal to sign RB Leipzig star Josko Gvardiol after his brilliant World Cup campaign with Croatia, says Fabrizio Romano.

The Lowdown: Boehly making statements...

After spending £241 million in the summer transfer window, business tycoon Todd Boehly has shown no sign of slowing down when it comes to backing his side in the Premier League.

Graham Potter looks set to receive the blessing of his club chiefs in terms of the January market as Chelsea apparently make moves behind-the-scenes.

Contact has apparently been made over USA international Yunus Musah already and, after an injury to striker Armando Broja, the search for his replacement appears to have begun.

The Latest: Chelsea 'working' on Gvardiol deal...

Amid this search for a striker stand-in, journalist Romano, arguably one of the most reliable sources in world football, claims Chelsea are also attempting a move for Gvardiol.

The Italian transfer reporter claims Boehly and co are 'working' on this deal in the background as well as finding a player who can come in for the injured Broja.

He explained (via Simon Phillips on Twitter):

"Chelsea are actively looking to find a new striker for January. They are exploring the market and there are many names on the table. No contacts for Cristiano Ronaldo at the moment.

"Chelsea are still working on the Josko Gvardiol deal."

The Verdict: Get it done...

The Bundesliga sensation was one of Croatia's stars of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar before their semi-final elimination.

Described as a 'Rolls Royce' and 'sensational' by members of the media for some of his performances under Zlatko Dalic, it's hardly surprising RB Leipzig could demand as much as €100 million (£86m) for his services.

If Boehly wishes to seriously upgrade Potter's defensive options, the Chelsea owner may have to invest significantly again.
