The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern think that Nemanja Matic is one of the Blues’ most underrated players…
Though not carrying the energy of an N’Golo Kante, or the attacking threat of a Cesc Fabregas – the role that Nemanja Matic plays is an absolutely vital one.
Serving as the transitional piece between defence and attack, Matic is often the player that makes the penultimate pass before an assist – springing the ball forward and into the feet of the more dangerous players within the Chelsea first team.
He certainly never gets the credit that he so often deserves, but Conte seemingly recognises it – having regularly opted to start him this season.
However, it seems as though Matic is not content with just playing as a midfielder – with the Serbian recently joking to Chelsea’s official website that Antonio Conte should play him as a striker after a stellar display in training.
Discussing a training ground tournament, Matic said: “By the end of the tournament I was second top scorer! Pedro was first, me second. It was good, and maybe Conte can think about me as a striker now”.
Whilst Matic certainly won’t be given a role ahead of Diego Costa anytime soon, it is certainly interesting that the Serbian has a string to his bow that is otherwise often hidden. That being said, he has earned 6 assists so far this season, so his offensive threat has certainly been on display under Conte.
