The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are excited by reports linking the Blues with a move for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain…
However, our landlord doesn’t think that he should be the only Gunner that they’re targeting this week. Indeed, he thinks that a move for forgotten Arsenal man Jack Wilshere makes a lot of sense too.
Chelsea are in desperate need of midfield depth, that much is clear. They desperately need bodies, and Wilshere would fit that mould. The main counterargument to this draws upon his lack of fitness in recent years, but that’s definitely something that Chelsea can work on. They have a fantastic medical team, and if there even a 10% chance that the Blues will be able to nurse him back to full health and keep him injury free, it’s a risk worth taking.
It’s easy to forget, but as a teenager, Wilshere was one of Europe’s best young players. He hasn’t lost that talent, but a lack of opportunity and a lack of fitness has really hurt him – and a move to Chelsea could be just what he needs to reinvigorate his career. Let’s not forget, he’s also homegrown – a trait that would help Chelsea reach their quota in that regard.
Will he be a starter every week? Definitely not. But if Chelsea can keep him fit, and Arsenal are open to selling him for a decent price, it’s a deal that makes a lot of sense.
