Crystal Palace could be preparing for another major departure this summer as their recent run of losing key players continues.
The Eagles have become accustomed to developing top talent before seeing them move on, with Michael Olise, Eberechi Eze and Marc Guehi all leaving Selhurst Park in recent seasons. Now, Maxence Lacroix could become the latest star to depart.
The French defender was instrumental in Palace’s FA Cup and Conference League successes, but has attracted interest from Chelsea. While the Blues have yet to submit an official offer, Palace are expected to demand a significant fee given Lacroix still has three years left on his contract.
Should he leave, Oliver Glasner’s side appear to already have a replacement in mind.
Palace Want Matsima to Replace Lacroix
According to The Evening Standard, Crystal Palace are monitoring Augsburg defender Chrislain Matsima as they prepare for the possibility of Lacroix’s exit.
The 24-year-old, who has been described as “very reliable” by Augsburg teammate Jeffrey Gouweleeuw, is one of several centre-back options being considered by the Eagles, although no formal talks have taken place yet.
Palace had also looked at Toulouse defender Charlie Cresswell, but he now appears close to joining Rennes, leaving Matsima as a potential alternative.
The Frenchman enjoyed an impressive spell in Germany before suffering a tendon injury that ruled him out for four months. He had previously joined Augsburg permanently from Monaco in January 2025 following an initial loan spell.
Known for his physical presence, pace and defensive ability, Matsima also has international pedigree, having featured for Thierry Henry’s France Olympic side in 2024 alongside current Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta.
