Crystal Palace ‘interested’ in signing Championship star who is a “lovely player on the ball”

Crystal Palace have built a reputation for identifying emerging talent in the Football League before turning those players into Premier League stars.

The likes of Romain Esse, Adam Wharton, Michael Olise and Eberechi Eze all arrived from the lower divisions before flourishing at Selhurst Park, with several later earning big-money moves elsewhere.

Now, it appears the Eagles are once again looking to the Championship in search of their next long-term success story.

Crystal Palace Interested in Shea Charles

According to Sky Sports News, Crystal Palace are among the clubs keeping tabs on Southampton midfielder Shea Charles.

Leeds United have already made two offers for the Northern Ireland international, but both bids have fallen short of Southampton’s valuation. Despite that, the newly-promoted side remain keen and are continuing discussions.

Palace, meanwhile, are monitoring the situation, although Sky Sports News reports they have not yet opened formal talks with Southampton. Fulham are also credited with an interest but are likewise yet to make contact.

Charles, who has been described as a “lovely player on the ball” by former Northern Ireland manager Ian Baraclough, effectively has two years remaining on his contract after Southampton activated an extension clause.

With Daichi Kamada recently committing his future to Palace by signing a new one-year deal, there is no immediate need to strengthen in midfield. However, the Eagles’ long-standing recruitment strategy suggests Charles is exactly the type of young talent they will continue to monitor closely.
