Celtic punters in the Transfer Tavern are having a few laughs at the expense of our Chelsea patrons, following news of Craig Gordon’s new contract.
The Scottish goalkeeper is better known in England for his troubled spell at Sunderland but has revived his career since moving to Celtic Park, now on course to claim a third consecutive top flight title as the Bhoys’ No.1.
And some impressive displays in the Champions League’s Group Stages this season seemingly generated interest from Chelsea, with London Evening Standard recently reporting on two bids in January and a potential follow-up offer for the summer transfer window.
But the west Londoners’ chances of signing Gordon appear to have evaporated, following Celtic’s confirmation that the 45-cap international has signed a three-year contract – via their official website.
Celtic even mention Chelsea’s interest in the 34-year-old during the last transfer window, hinting that it inspired manager Brendan Rodgers to tie Gordon down to extended terms as soon as possible.
Celtic can effectively put the Scottish title beyond mathematical doubt if they beat Rangers in the Old Firm derby on Sunday and Aberdeen lose to Motherwell. That would leave a 30-point margin the Dons can only match before the end of the season, but Celtic’s goal difference is superior by a whopping 31.
