Newcastle have finally made a splash in the transfer market, with Atlanta United’s Miguel Almiron moving to St James’ Park at last. It’s been a long time coming for the Magpies, but Rafael Benitez has finally got his man, it seems.
Almiron will join a talented group at Newcastle, and in particular, there’s a lot of quality within the attack that Benitez will now have to choose between.
That’s not going to be an easy task, but it’s not like the Magpies to have an embarrassment of riches, and so the boss will likely love how much choice he’s going to have.
But who exactly will make it into Newcastle dream 2019 attack, given Almiron’s arrival?
Well, you’d expect Newcastle to play with 4 players in their attack, and Kenedy seems like an obvious choice on the left. Of course, the Brazilian hasn’t had as good of a season this year as he did last year, and that’s a shame. It’s clear that he has a lot of talent, and on his day he’s unstoppable. But something is just stopping him from going to the next level. Nonetheless, he’s still a remarkable player, and hopefully, he’ll be able to find his form over the next few months. It will be a lot easier given the quality around him.
On the other flank, perhaps Ayoze Perez will feature. He’s arguably better through the middle, but he may be forced out wide by Newcastle’s new arrival. He’ll be expected to feature more prominently as a goalscorer this season than he has so far, as he’s been poor in front of goal this term. Still, he’s got all the talent in the world, and if he can regain his form from Alan Pardew’s days, the club will be in good shape.
Through the middle is the man himself, Miguel Almiron. Almiron had a fantastic season in the MLS last time out, and he’s deserved his move to England. He was the focal point of a title-winning attack, and he offered everything from fantastic passing to brilliant dribbling to pinpoint crossing goalscoring. If he’s able to get close to that form in England, the Paraguayan is sure to be a hit.
Salomon Rondon has been the first choice forward this season and with good reason. He’s physical and he’s a real nuisance for opposition players, and whilst he’s not the best goalscorer, he more than makes up for that with his fantastic ability elsewhere. He’ll be expected to up his goal tally in the second-half of the season if they’re to keep him long-term, though.
This attack has a fantastic mix of skill and power, and with Almiron in the fold, there’s no telling how far Newcastle could go this year.
