Everton: Noel Whelan says losing Richarlison for Southampton game is a ‘big problem’ - Everton News

Noel Whelan has claimed that Richarlison not playing for Everton against Southampton today is a ‘big problem’ for the Toffees.

Giving his thoughts to Football Insider, the former Leeds striker was asked about how big of a miss the Brazil international may be to Carlo Ancelotti’s side given that he picked up a straight red card in the Merseyside derby against Liverpool last week. Whelan said:

“He’s been linking up with Calvert-Lewin well up front with his pace and power and that goal threat.

“He’s going to be a massive miss, whether Rodriguez makes the game, he’s 50/50 at the minute, there goes another creative player in the side so you’re then looking to the bench to fill these places in.

“Can they replace those two? Not really. They’re standout players, they’re marquee players for Carlo Ancelotti and they’ve been doing excellently this season so far. That goal threat has gone.

“He’s got a big problem without Richarlison.”

Richarlison will be a ‘massive miss’

Indeed, Richarlison will arguably be a ‘massive miss’ to the hopes of Ancelotti’s team clinching all three points against the Saints.

Will Richarlison leave Everton this year?

The 23-year-old has scored 33 goals for the Blues in 86 games over all competitions in the last three seasons, including four goals in the 2020/21 campaign so far (Transfermarkt).

What year did Moyes first take charge at Everton?

Richarlison has also been important for the team in other key areas as well, winning a rather impressive 9.6 of his duels per Premier League game so far this term, in addition to averaging 3.2 successful dribbles per match (Sofascore).

Who could replace Richarlison?

Indeed, the question now is who can replace Richarlison for the Toffees at St Mary’s this afternoon. Former Everton player Kevin Campbell believes that Alex Iwobi could be the ‘ideal’ replacement for the Brazilian, but his are certainly big boots to fill.

Nonetheless, Ancelotti will be hoping to master a tough away performance and win at Southampton without his talisman in Richarlison, and thus maintain their position at the top of the table going into the next round of fixtures.
