Everton: Kevin Phillips lauds Anthony Gordon loan exit

Anthony Gordon Everton

Kevin Phillips has lauded the fact that Anthony Gordon has gone out on loan from Everton to play for Preston North End down in the EFL Championship.

Speaking to Football Insider, the former Southampton, Aston Villa and West Brom striker was happy with the fact that the England U20 international has moved temporarily away from the Goodison Park side in order to try and further his development:

“You would say that this is the next logical step in his development.

“That Everton side almost picks itself at the moment. When you know that, and you have had experience of playing in the first team, you want to go and play football. Why not let him go?

“Carlo Ancelotti has signed off on it and now the kid can go and showcase his skills. It’s great news and will be a great experience for him.

“Everton slipped up last week but they are heading in the right direction under Ancelotti.

“Gordon couldn’t get into that team and he needs to play so I’m glad he has headed out on loan. It is as simple as that.”

Everton right to loan out Gordon

The loan move for Gordon really does suit all parties involved. The 19-year-old was simply not getting enough game time at the Merseyside club, playing in a mere seven matches in total in all competitions, having only completed the full 90 minutes once (Transfermarkt).

He will certainly get more minutes on the pitch at Preston, with manager Alex Neil even going as far as to describe him as an ‘exciting’ player with a ‘huge potential’ upon signing him on Transfer Deadline Day (pnefc.net).

There is no doubt that Gordon has the potential to be a great player for Carlo Ancelotti’s team, but this loan move away will certainly help him in terms of his development and if he does well, the winger may be knocking on the door for a starting place come the start of the 2021/22 term.
