Chelsea are title favourites according to the majority of punters here in the Football Transfer Tavern but we still think that Jose Mourinho and his men need a couple more additions before they can really dominate both domestically and abroad.

Top of that list is another quality forward and as our regulars claim, the Blues could also do with getting rid of Fernando Torres as part of any deal bringing a forward to the club. Mourinho also seems keen on another defender and there are certainly two the Blues have been heavily linked with.

With that in mind, here are five players we think that Chelsea could make a late swoop for this summer.

Sami Khedira

Jose Mourinho knows the midfielder and has been heavily linked with him this summer. Now Real Madrid are up and running, Khedira will finally find out where he stands in Carlo Ancelotti’s eyes and we think it will be on the bench. That could well prompt the German to force through a move away from the Spanish side and his former boss will be waiting to top the list of potential suitors.

Mehdi Benatia

Will he or won’t he. One of the sagas of the summer and it seems that Mourinho is not willing to let this one drop. The Roma defender may cost around £30 million but the Special One does not put a price on good defending. They will have to fight Manchester United for the forward and convince Roma to part with him, but if anyone can do it, Mourinho can.

Ezequiel Lavezzi

The Argentine seems to be on his way out of Paris Saint Germain and Chelsea fans remember only too well just how effective he can be after their first leg Champions League defeat to the Ligue 1 side. We think that Lavezzzi could be the ideal option for the Blues. Not too expensive, versatile and with a point to prove.

Mattia Destro

Not only could the Blues land the coveted forward, they could also manage to offload Fernando Torres at the same time. Now that is the stuff of dreams according to the majority of our punters! For Chelsea to win the title, they need to bring in another forward they can rely on and the beauty of Destro is that he is not only one of the best young forwards in Europe but he is young enough to become a real legend at the club.

Raphael Varane

Another player Mourinho knows well from his time at Real Madrid and who he has been linked with this summer. Varane will struggle for playing time this season and the young Frenchman is willing to look at other options should Real Madrid not be the right one for him anymore. Chief amongst those options are Chelsea, with Mourinho being the one who brought the defender into the Real Madrid first team in the first place.
