With the International break now under way, punters here in the Transfer Tavern are eager to see how England can perform against some of Europe’s finest teams.
Indeed, instead of the likes of San Marino and Slovenia, England will go toe-to-toe with current champions Spain on Friday, before facing hosts and favourites for next summer’s European Championships, France.
Two victories against these sides would certainly be a real statement of intent from the Lions. Though England already laid down a marker by recording a 100% record in their qualifying campaign, the world will not start to notice until they can show they can do it against the very best.

A good mixture of youth and experience
In the past, England have often prided themselves on youth talent. The likes of Michael Owen, Wayne Rooney and most recently Raheem Sterling have all announced themselves on the big stage at international tournaments, but this time it appears Hodgson may have built a squad with the right blend.
Not only does Hodgson have exciting prospects such as John Stones, Delle Alli, Ross Barkley and Harry Kane coming through, but he also has wise heads such as Wayne Rooney and Joe Hart to balance the squad out.
In previous tournaments the youngsters have been merely spectators, but they look set to be a focal part of the squad this time.
Promising Partnerships
What is also exciting for Hodgson, is that many partnerships are being formed at club level this year, something which will only benefit the side. Smalling and Jones, Jagielka and Stones and finally, Alli and Dier are all examples of partnerships that have looked very good this season.
If this could be brought into the international side, then it would make Hodgson’s life far far easier.
A strong defence
Not only is Joe Hart getting better as a solid goalkeeper, but England’s back line looks as strong as ever. Nathanel Clyne has been excellent at right back, while they are spoilt for choice with some of their left backs, but it is at centre back where England have particularly improved.
Not only have the likes of Phil Jones and Chris Smalling really improved, but John Stones also continues to excite many. With a strong foundation at the back, England have great potential to do well.
In form forwards
By next summer, Hodgson could find himself with a real selection headache up top. Rooney, Vardy, Kane, Carroll, Welbeck, Sturridge, Berahino and Walcott could all be competing for places on the plane.
If Vardy and Kane in particular can take their club form into the Euros, they could be firing England to glory.
Squad competition
As alluded to in the previous point, Hodgson has good healthy competition in all areas. Even goalkeeper Joe Hart is being kept on his toes by the impressive Jack Butland.
In previous years, players have gone to tournaments not really worrying about their place being under threat. However, next summer Hodgson could find himself with 23 players all capable of starting, meaning his top players will be looking to perform at their very best.
