In our latest instalment of the Flashback series, we take a look back at the perspective of Moussa Sissoko during his time at Tottenham, and how fans’ opinion on the midfielder has changed over the past two years.
Moussa Sissoko is now rightly regarded as one of Tottenham’s best players but, as we all know, it hasn’t always been like this. The midfielder was once the laughing stock of the club. The turnaround he has shown is nothing short of sensational. Prior, for many, he was one of the worst signings in recent history.
The Frenchman was signed from Newcastle in a deadline day £30m move (as per Sky Sports) and was quickly dismissed as yet another dreadful Tottenham signing. Largely deployed on the wing, his lack of ability to pass, shoot or cross was highlighted time and time again.
Here are some of the thoughts Tottenham fans expressed:

If you ever feel you deserve a pay rise and your boss isn’t having any of it just remind them that Moussa Sissoko is on 90k a week

I’m not Moussa Sissoko’s biggest fan BUT he can’t be made the scapegoat after every match. His energy and drive got us up the pitch frequently with 10 men yesterday.
Admittedly it went nowhere, but still………… #THFC #COYS

Don’t know how Moussa Sissoko spent his youth career in Toulouse without somebody going “mate football isn’t for you but have you considered rugby”

It was certainly not looking good for the Tottenham midfielder. He had dropped out of the French squad due to his poor performances and fans were eagerly looking for him to be moved on. Yet, Sissoko is now viewed as one of the most important members of the squad. In fact, many believe he was the club’s best player this season.
This time 1 week from now Moussa Sissoko will be taking the field for a Champions League final. Imagine saying that 2 years ago.

You’re a hero regardless of the result next week Moussa.

“I can’t speak highly enough of him. Moussa’s story is incredible. It’s fair to say the first two seasons didn’t go the way he wanted them to, but he never stopped believing in himself and working hard to get to where he is today.”

Tottenham will now hope their new superstar can help them secure a quite incredible Champions League win. One thing is for certain. Where no one would have ever believed it, he will be one of the most important players on the night.
