Newcastle United fans here in the Tavern have enjoyed their week away from the Premier League, as they hope that the rest period will have a positive effect on the Magpies’ results.
The Toon Army have been in a spot of bother in recent times, as their Premier League future is hanging in the balance. Indeed, if it wasn’t for the efforts of Rafa Benitez then they may be in an even worse position, as the Spaniard springboarded a fightback with victory against Manchester United in their last outing.
Although, it’s been the goalkeeping department that’s caused for problems on Tyneside, with the inconsistent Karl Darlow calling for some much-needed back-up to help provide stability in-between the sticks. And, with Benitez’s future and survival resting on a possible future for current loanee Martin Dubravka, they’ve turned their attention to acquiring highly-rated Burnley ‘keeper Tom Pope.
However, this isn’t the ideal signing that Newcastle should be looking to as they move forward, with a more experienced goalkeeper benefiting a club that’s craving for consistencies in that particular department. Which is why landing ONE of these TWO goalkeepers would be far better for the Magpies…
Joel Robles
The 27-year-old has been displaced from his position as Everton’s first-choice goalkeeper this season by Jordan Pickford, with him yet to feature in the Premier League for the Toffees. Although, it’s always going to be hard to get into a side that’s spent £30 million on a goalkeeper, so a move for the Spaniard is looking likely with his contract set to expire this summer.
Therefore, Newcastle United should look to bring the ‘keeper to St James’ Park for a deal that would be of minimal cost, but guarantees them the consistency they’ve been lacking so far this season. And, with 17 clean sheets in the 51 appearances he’s made at Goodison Park, that’s not a bad return for a side that’s always flirting around mid-table.
Michel Vorm
The 34-year-old veteran was a shot-stopping sensation during his time with Swansea City, but has struggled to find a place in the Tottenham side due to the immovable Hugo Lloris. Although, there’s no doubt that the Dutch international possesses some special goalkeeping talents, that could quite easily see him earn regular game-time for a top Premier League team.
Indeed, with his contract set to run out in North London this summer, perhaps the Magpies could make an unexpected swoop. And, it’s fair to say that he’s the ideal kind of goalkeeper that’s attracted the attention of Benitez in the past, with fellow veterans Iker Casillas and Pepe Reina having been linked with a possible move.
But, acquiring the 34-year-old would contribute hugely to resolving their current inconsistencies, as experience is a driving factor in Michel Vorm’s game.
