Barry Ferguson has told PLZ Soccer that Jon McLaughlin’s arrival at Glasgow Rangers has given Allan McGregor a real struggle to get his hands on the number one shirt.
McLaughlin arrived on a free transfer from Sunderland to replace Wes Foderingham and Jak Alnwick, both of whom were released by the club following the premature end to the season. The two-time Scotland international conceded just 27 goals in 32 games in League One last term and has experience north of the border after his spell with Hearts.

And former Gers star Ferguson believes that he could give McGregor a run for his money. He said:
“Good signing. He will push Greegsy, and it will make Greegsy stronger, I think. He has got a real struggle to get that number one jersey.”
McGregor, currently valued at £540,000 by Transfermarkt, is a hero at Ibrox and is the undoubted number one between the sticks for Steven Gerrard – he kept 14 clean sheets in 27 matches in the Scottish Premiership in the previous campaign.

However, at 38 years of age, he surely can’t have too much left in the tank, and when he does eventually depart Gerrard and co must have a plan to replace him. McLaughlin himself is no spring chicken at 32, but if he lasts as long as McGregor that would still give him at least another six years at the club.
Competition is good for any side, and hopefully McLaughlin can push his rival all the way.
