Our Manchester City fans here in the Transfer Tavern are expecting big things in January from their club in terms of in-coming transfers.

You can see why, too. The City fans here by the bar have grown accustomed to seeing their team break the bank on innumerable occasions in recent years as they look to assemble the best squad imaginable.

Sometimes it’s worked, too, but at other times the policy has left them with very little return and so there will inevitably be some trepidation once the window opens next month.

For Pep Guardiola this window is crucial to the rest of the season. He has seen where the club need to improve and knows that the likes of Liverpool and Chelsea will also look to get recruits in as the title chase hots up.

Our landlord expects big figures to be spent then, and reckons these three players (valued at over £20 million by transfermarkt) could be perfect for the Citizens…

Alexis Sanchez £46.75m

City beat Arsenal at the weekend and Sanchez looked like a man who had had enough of failing with the Gunners.

It’d be wrong to write the London club off for the title just yet, of course, but they are looking frail once again and for a player like the Chilean who deserves more, that isn’t going to keep him long. City have the money and the potential for trophies to attract the forward in what would be an incredible move in the Premier League.

Saul Niguez £29.75m

The Spanish midfielder is regarded as one of the future bright sparks in La Liga so City would do well to get him in.

With a midfield that needs some extra impetus after Ilkay Gundogan’s injury and Yaya Toure and David Silva approaching their last few years, City need to act and should go for the Atletico man. Diego Simeone’s team haven’t been at their best this season and so Guardiola should try and see if he can prise Niguez away.

Alex Sandro £23.8m

City need better full backs that is for sure.

On the left neither Gael Clichy or Aleksandar Kolarov are good enough for a title winning team anymore whilst on the right Pablo Zabaleta and Bacary Sagna are past their best. The left side is definitely the weaker, however, and so City should be looking at Sandro who is a proven Champions League level defender. Our landlord thinks City’s defence is what needs the most work.
