Hasenhuttl is already getting Southampton’s January wrong with Gabbiadini decision

With the transfer window now open, departures are expected at Southampton this month.

And one player who looks set for the St. Mary’s exit door is Manolo Gabbiadini with the striker currently being linked with a move back to Italy.

The Breakdown

Sampdoria are the latest team said to be keen on signing Gabbiadini with Sky Sports reporting that the Serie A outfit have made a loan offer for the 27-year-old with an obligation to buy, while Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl has also confirmed interest from other clubs.

“A few teams are interested in Manolo and we have a look and if there’s a result we tell you,” Hasenhuttl told the Daily Echo.

“Sure [there has been offers]. We have to decide and he has to decide where he wants to go.”

There is no denying Gabbiadini’s struggles at St. Mary’s since joining from Napoli back in 2017, and a move back to Italy is probably in his best interest as he looks to rediscover some form.

From a Southampton perspective, however, the Italy international is worth keeping around until at least the end of the season.

Hasenhuttl needs an alternative to Danny Ings and Charlie Austin, who have both had their injury problems. And with Shane Long — an even less prolific No.9 — the only other senior option in the squad, the Saints would be better of retaining Gabbiadini’s services.
