The Manchester City fans were delighted in the Transfer Tavern last night after their side firmly placed one foot in the quarter finals of the Champions League with a comprehensive 4-0 win over FC Basel at St. Jakob Park.
Pep Guardiola’s side further strengthened their quadruple ambitions with an emphatic 4-0 victory last night. City were rather fortunate to avoid conceding an early goal against Basel, as some kamikaze defending allowed for the Swiss outfit to create a couple of early chances before they had a very strong shout for a penalty turned down after Otamendi upended Dimitri Oberlin inside the area.
However, The Citizens survived their early scare and took firm control of proceedings in the 14th minute when Ilkay Gundogan did brilliantly to head Kevin De Bruyne’s corner into the back of the net. The result never looked in doubt from that moment on as Gundogan grabbed his second of the night and City’s fourth in the second half after Bernardo Silva and Sergio Aguero had all but ended the tie as a contest inside the first 25 minutes.
Next up for City is a trip to face Wigan Athletic in the 5th round of the FA Cup on Monday evening before they travel to Wembley on Sunday to face Arsenal in the Carabao Cup final.
Ahead of their trip to Wembley, Craig Pawson was officially confirmed as the referee for their season-defining fixture.
Pawson’s appointment has not gone down too well with the City supporters on Twitter who have pointed towards his decision to unjustly rule out a City goal in their FA Cup semi-final clash with Arsenal last season as a legitimate reason to bemoan the appointment.
Here’s what the City fans have had to say about Craig Pawson’s appointment on Twitter…
