There are some raised eyebrows in the Football Transfer Tavern today with the The Mirror suggesting that Serie A side Napoli are looking to bring interim Chelsea boss Rafael Benitez and Blues striker Fernando Torres to the Stadio San Paolo.
Benitez has already held talks with the Italian side before he flew to North America with the Chelsea squad and if he wants the job he can take it.
The former Liverpool boss impressed while at Stamford Bridge leading the team to Europa League glory and a third placed Premier League finish despite widespread criticism. Napoli could appear an attractive option after they finished second in Serie A automatically qualifying for next season’s Champions League group stages.
However the Neapolitans are expected to lose star striker Edinson Cavani, who may move to England with Manchester City, and although the Citizens are likely to send Edin Dzeko in part exchange, enough money will be spare to bring Torres along to Italy.
The club’s owners are hoping that Benitez can continue to get the best out of Torres, 29, after the striker performed slightly better under his former Reds manager finishing the season with 23 goals in all competitions.
