Newcastle came out of their opening game against Tottenham with nothing, despite the fact they played well enough to win the game. Football’s a cruel game and the Magpies deserved all three points against the Lillywhites but it wasn’t to be. Joselu’s goal was the bright point for the fans and after the Spaniard’s performance, most fans are in agreement that he can’t be dropped next week.
Joselu was terrific yesterday. Would you start him at Cardiff or ruthlessly go with Rondon/Muto? #NUFC

Joselu put in what was arguably his best ever performance in a Newcastle shirt yesterday and even though new signing, Salomon Rondon will be knocking on the door for a starting spot, it’s crucial that Rafa Benitez picks his starting eleven on merit. It would simply be impossible to justify dropping Joselu after the shift he put in on the opening weekend, with his well-taken header levelling the scores up and giving the Geordies a chance.
In the second-half, Joselu showed that his game isn’t all about goals when he played a sublime ball through, slipping Kenedy in one-on-one with Hugo Lloris, however, the Brazilian couldn’t sort his feet out and his first touch took the ball into the Spurs’ skipper. Joselu was then subbed with just under an hour on the clock and Salomon Rondon came on in his place. However, with the Venezuelan failing to find the net, a lot of supporters are calling for their Spaniard to start at Cardiff next Saturday.
You can read the Magpies’ verdict on Joselu here:
I’d like to see Minto behind Joselu…I’ve a feeling Perez isn’t going to be first choice for much longer.

Joselu will start and probably deserves to. Scored a good goal; delicious pass through for Kenedy that should have been tucked away. Thought he had his best game in a Newcastle shirt so to drop him would indeed be ruthless.

Joselu played out of his skin to be terrific…. for him, fair play to him, I don't think that header was meant to go where it did, but it was a great ball for Kenedy, can't ask any more of him, for me he's back up though, Rondon should start IMHO!

Rondon is not match sharp and Joselu scored. I can’t see why he would drop him, but long term Rondon is who we should be starting obviously

He earned another start I feel, maybe decent competition was all he needed to come good

Just from this, it’s clear to see that the Magpies are keen to see Joselu given another chance next week and if he takes it, he could be keeping Rondon out of the team this season.
