Our Newcastle fans here in the Transfer Tavern reckon the title is their’s to lose after they got another decent result last time out against Reading.
The last three games in the Magpies’ schedule looked on paper to be real threats to their Championship winning credentials but they have come through them relatively unscathed.
Wins away from home at Huddersfield and Brighton as well as last night’s draw at Reading have set their title challenge up nicely and many here by the bar have remarked that their away form is better than that at St. James’ Park.
Indeed, that is something Rafa Benitez spoke about after the game in Berkshire and suggested why that might be the case – as quoted by Chronicle Live – with him saying:
“I would like to think we can enjoy games at home with 50,000 fans behind the team. But we know teams come away from home and they are quite compact.
“In football now they know their jobs and when they play Newcastle they have to defend.”
Surely, then, the club’s home form is where things need to improve towards the end of the season and if they can do so combined with their great away form they should be laughing.
Indeed, they get the chance to start such a run with a match against Fulham this weekend and so it remains to be seen whether the Magpies perform to their maximum in front of their own fans.
