Literally all of the Liverpool fans propping up the bar in the Transfer Tavern STILL have looks of disappointment plastered across their faces following their gutting loss to Southampton in the EFL Cup semi-final last night. 

There really wasn’t much that went right for the Reds at Anfield the other night as the slick and fluid attacks so prevalent during their early season form seemed to desert them, with the form of striker Daniel Sturridge cited as a major reason the Kop titans were unable to even score.

On an almost gamely basis, the 27-year-old looks increasingly like a square peg in a round hole and a shadow of the lethal forward who almost led the Merseyside titans to a league title under Brendan Rodgers. Just what’s up with perhaps England’s most naturally talented forward is unclear, though it’s looking like Anfield is not the best environment to rediscover his former self.

With that in mind, here’s a closer look at the TWO main reasons Jurgen Klopp should sell Sturridge ASAP.

On the wane

Liverpool know all about selling a striker who has scored many goals at Anfield during the closing stages of the January window, having lost Fernando Torres to Chelsea back in 2011.

In many ways, Sturridge’s situation is looking slightly akin to that of the Spaniard’s, with injuries having seemingly taken their toll on his confidence, as well as mobility. Selling him now would see the Reds bank a huge fee, perhaps enough to go into the summer window to go out and buy a top European talent.

Woodburn’s development

Much has been made about the emerging Ben Woodburn, who recently wrote himself into the history books by becoming the Reds’ youngest ever goalscorer.

The 17-year-old is a hugely exciting talent, one able to float across the frontline, though boasts the searing pace to lead the line and break behind enemy lines. Surely allowing Sturridge a move away would help the Welshman develop.
