Newcastle United: Takeover breakdown from journalist Mark Douglas has some supporters fearing the worst

Responding to a thorough, detailed breakdown of the takeover situation by Newcastle Chronicle journalist Mark Douglas, plenty of Magpies supporters have had their say on Twitter over the apparent ongoing negotiations between Mike Ashley and Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s Saudi Arabian consortium.

A report from The Guardian stated at the end of January that a deal was ‘90%‘ complete and Prince Salman would obtain the majority shares of the club for Ashley’s £340 million asking price. However, almost a fortnight on from that news, there has been nothing but radio silence. The Daily Mirror, in that time, have claimed Ashley also wants a non-refundable bond of £250,000 paid to him directly as well as the asking price, but talks on the takeover seemed to have stalled with no ‘concrete‘ offer, according to the Sports Direct magnate.

This piece from Douglas, highlighting the fact Ashley has spent seven-figure sums on lawyers to force though a deal in the past, could prove that he is indeed a willing seller, but the article also goes on to highlight that more publicity may persuade Ashley to test the buyers’ resolve when it comes to increasing offers.
