Leeds United: Club interested in Jordan Amavi

Leeds United are expected to have a quiet January transfer window, via Phil Hay, but fresh reports have emerged that they are monitoring Jordan Amavi.

The latest on Amavi

According to Foot01, the Marseille left-back is struggling to agree a contract extension, and this is very worrying for the French side as it means he could leave for free in the summer.

Both Crystal Palace and Leeds are monitoring his situation, and it seems like the player is finding the proposition of playing under Marcelo Bielsa at Leeds the better option. The French media outlet say Amavi sees playing for the enigmatic Elland Road boss as an ‘attractive’ option.

Should Leeds look to sign Amavi

The 26-year-old has made 15 appearances for the Ligue 1 outfit this season, including five Champions League appearances (WhoScored). He has impressed in Ligue 1, averaging 1.2 tackles, 2.9 interceptions and 2.8 clearances a match. He also has some experience in England, making 48 appearances for Aston Villa from 2015-2017 (Transfermarkt).

Currently Leeds have Ezgjan Alioski and Leif Davis as their first team left-backs. However, Alioski has only managed 0.7 interceptions and one clearance per game in the Premier League (WhoScored), so perhaps relying solely on a converted midfielder isn’t the way forward.

Therefore it could be a good idea from Bielsa to move Alioski further up the pitch and bring in Jordan Amavi. This would also educate young Leif Davis a lot more as he would be learning from a proper left-back.

What makes the deal even better is the fact that he is valued at £9m, but could be picked up on a free in the summer by Bielsa’s side if Marseille cannot pen him to a new deal.
