Leeds United: January signings unlikely, claims Beren Cross

Journalist Beren Cross has insisted that it is “highly unlikely” that Leeds United will enter the transfer market in January.

The Lowdown: Busy summer for Leeds

The Whites were busy over the summer transfer window, with deals for four players confirmed after seeing 12 depart the club, including Ezgjan Alioski, Pablo Hernandez, Helder Costa and Kiko Casilla.

Brought in to Elland Road were goalkeeper Kristoffer Klaesson, Junior Firpo from Barcelona and Daniel James from Manchester United, while Jack Harrison’s loan move from Manchester City was made permanent.

With the January transfer window open in three months’ time, talk of Leeds’ business in the mid-season window has already begun after only six games, with Marcelo Bielsa’s men still seeking a first Premier League win of the campaign.

The Lowdown: Cross provides update

Writing in a Q&A for Leeds Live, Cross has shared his view on the likelihood of any incomings in the January transfer window, hinting that the Elland Road faithful shouldn’t hold their breath.

He said: “The problem with January business is you’re always fighting an uphill battle to make it work under Bielsa.

“Assuming you sign the player in mid to late January. They need six weeks with the under-23s before they’re ready physically and tactically for Bielsa. You’re looking at the final six weeks of a season for the player to have an impact.

“If there was some form of injury crisis, then I am sure the club would act, but it seems highly unlikely if the squad is largely available to Bielsa through the second half of the season.”

The Verdict: New signings may be needed

Whilst Cross’ comments may dampen the prospects of any potential business in the January window, Leeds may be forced to enter the market due to their poor start to the season and the possibility of shortages in key positions.

Diego Llorente and Robin Koch are currently out injured, with Luke Ayling and Adam Forshaw also among those on the treatment table, and Patrick Bamford has struggled in front of goal this season, scoring only once in six Premier League fixtures.

They currently sit in the relegation zone, and if one of their key players were to pick up a lengthy injury, Bielsa may have little option but to seek some new additions in January when he has the opportunity to add to his squad.

In other news, Joe Urquhart has revealed that this key Leeds player should play in this weekend’s game. Find out more here.
