Leeds United could be willing to sanction the departure of left-back Leif Davis this summer, according to a report from Football League World.
The lowdown: Successful loan spell
Sent to Bournemouth to further his exposure to first-team football, the 22-year-old enjoyed a successful stint on the south coast as Scott Parker’s side earned promotion back to the Premier League.
The youngster was described as an ‘animal’ by the Cherries manager following a 4-0 victory over Swansea due to a ferocious playing style which saw the Newcastle-born starlet earn a 7.6 Sofascore rating whilst making one assist, three clearances and four interceptions.
Despite previously being tipped for a permanent move to Bournemouth, Davis remains part of Jesse Marsch’s Leeds squad for the time being, although that could change depending on one significant factor…
The latest: Leeds open to selling Davis
As per Football League World on Monday, Leeds would be ‘very open to selling’ Davis, but only if a frontline full-back option is signed beforehand.
It’s claimed that ‘sources’ have informed the outlet that a ‘lack of numbers’ currently in place at Elland Road and the injuries suffered to Junior Firpo and Stuart Dallas have made the Whites’ director of football Victor Orta currently unwilling to sanction a move for the youngster.
The report added that League One outfit Ipswich Town have an ‘ongoing’ pursuit of the starlet and are waiting for Leeds’ decision.
The verdict: New left-back needed first
With both Firpo and Dallas ruled out of the early part of the upcoming 2022/23 season, it is imperative that Jesse Marsch is given the funds by Andrea Radrizzani to sign a marquee left-back option, such as the heavily linked Anderlecht defender Sergio Gomez or recently re-emerging target Nicolas Tagliafico from Ajax.
Whilst a move away would make perfect sense for all parties when it comes to Davis, Leeds are right to be steadfast in their current stance and potentially make the youngster wait until January should the necessary reinforcements not be forthcoming.
That’s because, as things stand, the £720,000-valued man – who made 15 Championship outings last term – will be the only natural senior left-back at Marsch’s disposal when the Whites welcome Wolves to Elland Road for their opening day fixture.
Therefore, they must sit tight until a replacement can be sorted, as the Yorkshire club rightfully won’t contemplate a sale for Davis at this juncture.
