Leeds United will sign free agent Joel Robles next week, according to Graham Smyth.

The Lowdown: Robles profiled

Robles is currently without a club after leaving Real Betis in the summer. Aged 32, the Spaniard has previously plied his trade in the Premier League with both Everton and Wigan, keeping 29 clean sheets in English football.

He put in a brilliant display for Wigan at Wembley in a shock FA Cup final win over Manchester City back in 2013, and it looks as if a return to England is now on the cards.

The Latest: Leeds move

Phil Hay recently shared news from Jesse Marsch's pre-Wolves press conference that a goalkeeper signing is expected next week, and fellow reporter Smyth has now revealed that Leeds are set 'to sign’ Robles.

He added in a story for The Yorkshire Evening Post ahead of the club’s Premier League opener that a move is indeed set to go through ‘in the next week’.

The Verdict: Smart signing?

Meslier is now the oldest goalkeeper at the club at the age of 22 after Kiko Casilla had the final 12 months of his Elland Road contract terminated.

Therefore, bringing in someone like Robles on a free appears to be a wise move, especially as Kristoffer Klaesson has ‘picked up an issue’ and Dani van den Heuvel was involved in a serious off-field accident.

Robles has plenty of experience in Spain and England and should settle in well alongside fellow countrymen Diego Llorente, Junior Firpo, Marc Roca and Rodrigo, but hopefully he won’t need to feature in the Premier League at all given Meslier's brilliant rise to stardom.
