Leeds United have an exciting prospect in their ranks in Sam Greenwood, and Phil Hay has provided an update on what Marcelo Bielsa has planned for the attacker.
The latest on Greenwood
Leeds clearly believe the Englishman has an exciting future as they paid £1.53m to bring him to Elland Road from Arsenal last August (Transfermarkt). Phil Hay simply reported via The Athletic that the teenager, who can operate on both flanks, through the middle and just behind the striker is likely to play more of a role up front under Bielsa, saying: ‘Leeds are more inclined to field him as a No 9’.
Bielsa knows best
The 19 year-old is not just being noticed at club level, but also for his country as he has played three times for the England U18 side, scoring one goal along the way (Transfermarkt). He is impressing for the Leeds U23 side, scoring six goals in 12 appearances and this was rewarded with him getting 32 minutes in the FA Cup earlier this season against Crawley.
It is interesting that Leeds want him as the main striker, and this is due to the fact that when he was playing for the Sunderland academy, he was used more as a second striker. However his goal tally this season emphasises that he is prolific and if Bielsa’s plans involve him as a No 9, then it is probably to best place to utilise him.
Arsenal writer Art de Roche spoke about the player last year, when asked about how close he is to first-team football. He said: ‘Currently, he would have been quite a way off but that isn’t a slight at his quality.’
And, Leeds Live’s Joe Donnohue remarked back in late December: “It is understandable that a striker with considerable pedigree who has brought goals wherever he has played in PL2 should be of interest to Championship clubs.
“He may have hit the ground running at Thorp Arch, but he has only been here for a matter of months. His start may have been excellent, so imagine how much better he could be with consistent football.”
Whatever Bielsa has planned, it is a very exciting time for any emerging academy star at the club due to Leeds looking like they will be a comfortable Premier League side for many seasons.
