Leeds: Phil Hay provides Conor Gallagher update -Leeds United Transfer Rumours

Leeds United could still retain an interest in signing Crystal Palace’s on-loan midfielder Conor Gallagher, according to journalist Phil Hay.

The Lowdown: Leeds linked with Gallagher move

The Whites had a productive summer in the transfer market, bringing in the likes of Junior Firpo and Dan James, but one player they missed out upon was Gallagher.

Leeds were linked with a move for the Chelsea youngster, with terms even reported to have been agreed between the two clubs, but instead he opted to join Palace on loan.

The 21-year-old has shone for the Eagles so far this season, scoring three goals and registering two assists in nine Premier League appearances, proving to be a very effective player at Selhurst Park.

The Latest: Hay provides update

Speaking in a Q&A for The Athletic after Leeds’ vital 2-1 victory away to Norwich City on Sunday afternoon, Hay gave an update regarding the Whites’ potential interest in Gallagher when asked about the possibility of the Yorkshire club going back in for the midfielder.

He admitted that Marcelo Bielsa is still a fan of 21-year-old, but warned that Chelsea may not be willing to let him leave permanently, saying:

“His value will be going up and up but as you saw with James, Bielsa does tend to retain an interest in specific players he rates. Gallagher is probably hoping for a chance at Chelsea though.”

The Verdict: Ideal Bielsa player

It may be that Leeds are unable to sign Gallagher, but if Chelsea suddenly made him available, he could be an ideal signing for the Whites. Indeed, as Hay pointed out, Bielsa has a track record of maintaining a long-held interest in some transfer targets – Dan James was on the verge of a move to Elland Road in 2019 before it collapsed, but he eventually became a Leeds player in this summer’s transfer window.

As for Gallagher, his quality in the final third, as highlighted by his aforementioned statistics, is complemented by his hard-working nature, averaging 2.4 tackles and 2.1 fouls per game in the league this season. With Bielsa notorious for working Leeds players to the bone in training, the English youngster could be a good fit for the Whites boss based on his off-the-ball statistics.

At 21, Gallagher would also represent a long-term acquisition, allowing Leeds to build into the future. Hopefully this is a move that the club may revisit in 2022.
