Leeds United still 'very much want' to sign RB Salzburg midfielder Brenden Aaronson in the near future, according to reliable journalist Phil Hay.

The Lowdown: Aaronson saga

The Whites are running out of time to complete business in the January transfer window, with deadline day on Monday swiftly approaching.

One player they have been constantly linked with signing in recent days is Aaronson, who shares the same agent as current Elland Road ace Adam Forshaw. The American is thought to be keen on a move to Yorkshire.

Indeed, the Whites are still waiting on a response to their second bid of £20m, with Graham Smyth reporting they are also considering jumping in with a third offer.

According to one report though, a summer move is more likely than a January switch, and Hay has now provided his thoughts on that matter.

The Latest: Hay provides update

Taking to Twitter on Friday, Hay provided a ten-word verdict that confirmed Leeds are still interested in snapping up the 21-year-old, but also seems to imply it may not happen this month:

"They very much want Aaronson and are prepared to wait."

The Verdict: Matter of time?

Hay's comments add further fuel to the fire regarding Aaronson's move taking place in the summer, and while not necessarily ideal - another midfielder is needed this month to alleviate the absence of Kalvin Phillips - it is still a positive update.

The Salzburg man is already a key player for a Champions League-playing club, starting all six of his side's group stages match in this season's competition, showing he is ready to thrive at the highest level.

Aaronson's end product in the final third could help add another dimension to the Whites' midfield, with his record of ten goals in 51 appearances for Salzburg far more prolific than the likes of Phillips (14 in 226), Adam Forshaw (none in 68) and Mateusz Klich (22 in 162).

He also has five goals in 15 caps for the USA, showing that he is also a force at international level, and he should only improve with age in the coming years. In fact, one of his country's greatest ever players, DaMarcus Beasley, drooled over his 'silky' footwork while he was still playing in the MLS.

While fans will no doubt be desperate for an arrival of any kind in the next few days, Aaronson is one who could be worth the wait.
