Leeds United have been recently linked with a move for Serie A midfielder Elijf Elmas, and there has been a new update on their pursuit of the player.
The latest on Elmas
According to Area Napoli, Italian side Napoli are determined to keep midfielder Elijf Elmas and have already turned down a ‘monstrous offer’ from Leeds United for him.
This will be frustrating for Leeds
The 21 year-old has featured seven times in the Serie A this campaign, with all of them as a substitute (Transfermarkt). However he has picked up a goal during these games. He is young and to be involved in a tough league like the Italian division as well as the Europa League emphasises the potential he has.
Elmas, who cost €16m (£14.7m), has been key for his country and assisted the goal scored by Goran Pandev which sent North Macedonia to the European Championships for the first time. To be part of this great historic moment would have been an amazing achievement for the youngster.
The reports before the update revealed an offer was rejected suggested that Leeds, and other sides in Europe like Borussia Dortmund, Borussia Monchengladbach and RB Leipzig, as well as Benfica, had all made €25m (£22.8m) offers to sign the 21-year-old.
It will obviously be frustrating for Leeds and Director of Football Victor Orta if such an offer was turned down. Their club record signing was Rodrigo at £26 million, so the fact that they made a bid close to that with Elmas shows how much they rate the player.
