Leeds United will have taken a 'keen interest' in events at Rangers on Tuesday, offering hope of a potential deal for Ryan Kent, according to The Athletic.

The lowdown

Leeds have held an interest in signing Kent in previous transfer windows, although a move is yet to materialise for one reason or another.

However, things took a fresh twist this week, with Rangers failing to qualify for the Champions League, after a shock defeat to ten-men Malmo saw them crash out of the qualifying stages of the competition.

That means that Rangers could potentially be facing fresh interest from other clubs for some of their key players before the transfer window reaches a conclusion on 31st August, with some pundits believing they may now be forced to cash in.

The latest

Phil Hay has recently revealed that it's 'no secret' Leeds and Marcelo Bielsa have 'liked' Kent for a considerable amount of time.

The Athletic journalist shared Jordan Campbell's report confirming that the Yorkshire-based side will have taken a 'keen interest' in events at Ibrox on Tuesday evening, as Rangers failed to qualify for the Champions League this season.

"Leeds United have watched Kent for two years — they will have taken a keen interest in events at Ibrox."

The verdict

Kent could be the game-changer Leeds are looking for this season, and it'll be interesting to see whether they reignite their interest in landing his signature this summer after Rangers failed to qualify for the Champions League.

The winger has impressed for the Gers in the 2020/21 season, as he scored ten league goals and was on hand to provide nine assists for his team-mates, as they won the Scottish Premiership with ease.

Kent had an average Whoscored rating of 7.43, which put him second on the list of Rangers' best performers during their title-winning campaign, with only James Tavernier (7.69) having a higher rating than the winger.

Former Rangers man Brian Laudrup labelled Kent as an 'outstanding prospect' in an interview with The Glasgow Times back in June, and we feel he could be an excellent signing for Bielsa and co.
