Leeds United remain interested in signing Portsmouth’s Jamal Lowe this summer, according to a report by Gazette Live.
The media outlet claims the Whites are one of a few Championship outfits said to be interested in the impressive League One attacker, with the likes of Middlesbrough and Wigan Athletic both thought to be keen as well.
The 25-year-old is said to have entered the final 12 months of his contract at Fratton Park and is understood to be keen on leaving the south coast after they failed to obtain promotion to England’s second tier.
The 25-year-old has been linked heavily with a move to Leeds over the last few months, with Sky Sports claiming Marcelo Bielsa’s side were interested in him back in May.
Lowe was instrumental for Portsmouth last season and played a huge role in helping Kenny Jackett’s side reach the play-offs, although they were unable to get past Sunderland in their semi-final.
And, going by his stats, it is hardly a surprise to hear that the Championship giants are thought to be sniffing around.
The winger, who is valued at £68k by Transfermarkt, managed to contribute 17 goals and nine assists in his 55 matches across all competitions for Pompey, with 15 of those efforts and all his assists coming in League One football (Transfermarkt).
To put those figures into context and how they can help Leeds next season, Kemar Roofe finished the club’s top scorer with 15 goals, whereas Pablo Hernandez and Mateusz Klich provided 12 and nine assists respectively (WhoScored).
Obviously, going a step up can always be a daunting task and one that not many players will find easy when trying to replicate their previous form. However, a former team-mate of his believes he is ready for the next step.
Speaking to The News (Portsmouth), Gary Roberts revealed he felt Lowe would be comfortable playing in the Championship and had all the tools to be a success in the division.
“I’ve seen enough of the Championship now to say he will be comfortable in that level, definitely,” he said.”Jamal’s genuinely a good player, has an eye for goal and is humble. When you’ve had that non-league grounding it gives you that little bit extra and you can see how much he wants to do well.”
Leeds could make do with a player of Lowe’s goalscoring and creative ability in the final third of the pitch as Bielsa’s side only managed to score 76 goals in the Championship last season – finishing fifth in the overall standings with the likes of West Bromwich Albion above them with 89 (WhoScored).
The 25-year-old looks destined to leave Portsmouth this summer but whether the Whites look to act upon their alleged interest or can convince him he is better off joining them rather than Middlesbrough or Wigan remains to be seen.
