Liverpool close in on first summer capture

toure.jpgIt’s really starting to hot up in the Football Transfer Tavern with transfer gossip pouring into the tavern from all angles today.

The biggest story of the day involves Manchester City defender Kolo Toure being lined up by Brendan Rodgers to become Liverpool’s first signing of the summer to replace retiring Reds legend Jamie Carragher.

The Telegraph reports that the 32-year-old Ivory Coast defender, who is a free transfer, will have a medical at Liverpool once City arrive back from the USA at the weekend. His contract expires at the Etihad Stadium in June and having struggled to gain first team football following his six-month ban after accidentally taking a banned substance in 2011,  Liverpool have now taken steps to secure his signature.

Toure, who joined Manchester City from Arsenal in 2009 for £16 million, will be looking for a fresh start as he reaches the end of his career while Liverpool want to add much-needed experience to their backline after Carragher’s retirement and Rodgers feels that if the centre back can gain full fitness he will be a fine swoop for the Reds.

Liverpool are also linked with moves for Schalke’s Greek defender Kyriakos Papadopoulos and Sporting Lisbon’s Tiago Ilori as the former Swansea City boss seeks to further strengthen his defence.

Is Toure the solution for the Reds? Should Liverpool be after higher profile defensive targets? Rate this rumour below.
