Liverpool: Fans impressed with Joel Matip’s performance against Chelsea

Liverpool maintained their 100% winning start to the 2019/20 Premier League season by beating Chelsea 2-1 at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

There were plenty of strong performances from Reds players, but it was Cameroonian centre-back Joel Matip who stood out the most.

Whilst his centre-back partner Virgil van Dijk often gets all the plaudits (and rightly so), it was the man signed on a free transfer from Schalke 04 who was subjected to praise following their win in West London.

Going into the game, Tammy Abraham was on fire with seven goals in his last three Premier League appearances though was largely marked out of the game by the Champions League-winner.

As Chelsea threw everything at the Liverpool backline, the Cameroon international remained solid as a rock and, according to WhoScored, he made 10 clearances, three tackles and two interceptions to help the Reds to three points.

Indeed, he has clearly won the Liverpool faithful around with some outstanding performances in the last few months, and his latest display has several of their fans on Twitter giving him rave reviews…
