Liverpool: Fans impressed with Joel Matip’s performance against Sheffield United

Liverpool continued their perfect start to the 2019/20 Premier League season with a 1-0 win against Sheffield United on Saturday.

The Reds were not at their best at Bramall Lane and were perhaps fortunate to come away with all three points. However, a mistake from Blades goalkeeper Dean Henderson ensured that Jurgen Klopp’s side maintained their 100% winning start.

Whilst few of the Liverpool players impressed in South Yorkshire, one man who did was centre-back Joel Matip.

The Cameroonian remained solid throughout alongside Virgil van Dijk, keeping the likes of Oli McBurnie and Callum Robinson quiet and helping the league leaders to a second clean sheet of the league campaign.

His stats for the game were excellent, winning seven aerial duels, making five interceptions and one tackle in the match (via WhoScored).

Matip has become a key player for the Anfield club in the last year, leapfrogging both Joe Gomez and Dejan Lovren to become a regular starter. He has now played 90 minutes in all of their last six Premier League outings, forming a brilliant partnership with van Dijk.

His performance against Sheffield United didn’t go unnoticed by the Liverpool supporters, many of whom were quick to praise him on social media after the game. Here is what a few of them had to say after the club tweeted about him yesterday…
