It’s not often that you see Liverpool on the wrong end of a thrashing, but that’s exactly what happened last night. The Reds’ U23 side hosted Villarreal’s U23s in their Premier League International Cup opener and were blasted 7-0 by the Spaniards.
A much-changed #LFCU23s side defeated in their #PLInternationalCup opener.

You can forgive the supporters for wanting to give this match report a miss, but those brave Reds who are going to have a read can find it on the Liverpool website. Supporters shouldn’t allow themselves to get too downbeat over this heavy defeat, after all, the U23s boss Neil Critchley having to make eight changes to his regular side as his players have dropped like flies with injuries and international commitments.
It’s always hard to take a thumping like the one that Villarreal gave the Reds, but the fans will have to take heart from the fact that it was a much changed, inexperienced side they put out and that when the next game in the Premier League International Cup comes around they’ll have more of their regulars available to face Hoffenheim’s U23s, although goal difference could now play a bit of a factor after such a heavy defeat in their opener.

I’m no expert on U23 football, but a 7-0 defeat seems sub-optimal to me… #LFC #YNWA

The wrong side of a seven goal thriller, basically.

The Reds will be hoping their young side can get back to winning ways next time out and will be eager to put this loss behind them.
