It would have taken a brave man to put Crystal Palace in their accumulator yesterday. The Eagles travelled to The Etihad with the aim of becoming the first Premier League side out of the top six to beat the Citizens since February 2016 when Leicester beat them, and Liverpool fans everywhere flocked to thank Palace for the huge win.

After Liverpool beat Wolves on Friday night they’d already confirmed that they’d be sitting at the top of the Premier League on Christmas day, but Manchester City could still cut the gap to just one point with a win over Crystal Palace, and it looked like it would be a routine three points for Pep Guardiola’s side. However, it was nothing of the sort as Roy Hodgson gave his former club a massive early Christmas present.
Jurgen Klopp’s side are now four points clear of City as we sit one game shy of the half-way point in the season. The title odds are now swinging in Liverpool’s favour and they have Andros Townsend and Hodgson to thank for it, against all the odds. The 3-2 win that the Eagles recorded yesterday will make up for the 3-3 draw at Selhurst Park from four years ago if the Reds go on to win the Premier League, and yesterday’s action could prove crucial in the long run.

Some of the Liverpool fans enjoyed this win more than the Palace fans did, and if this ends up as a season-defining result for Liverpool then it’s unlikely a Palace fan will ever to pay for their own pint on Merseyside ever again.
