Following the departure of Neil Critchley, there’s a lot of buzz surrounding the open Liverpool U23 coaching role. Indeed, many fans seem to believe this is the perfect time for a former player to come back to the club, and some of those supporters think club legend Xabi Alonso is the man for the job.
Liverpool’s U23 squad is really flourishing at the moment, with the likes of Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott impressing in their senior cameos. Critchley, the former U23s coach, recently left the club to take up the role as head coach of Blackpool.
While it’s unclear as to who may be handed the role, Alonso has coached youth teams at Real Madrid and is currently in charge of Real Sociedad’s B team, having previously spoken about his desire to manage the Reds one day having established himself as a legend at Anfield during his playing days, scoring in the infamous Champions League final win back in 2005.
Fans are loving the idea of Alonso returning to Merseyside to teach the youngsters how to score his trademark screamers. Several fans are saying the Spaniard would be ‘perfect’ for the position. One supporter has said they would ‘prefer Xabi’ over even Steven Gerrard (though surely unlikely considering he is a senior manager) for the job.
