Many Liverpool fans criticised former Reds’ fan favourite Dietmar Hamann after he scrutinised their big summer signing Thiago Alcantara.
But Hamann believes that Thiago “doesn’t play the Liverpool way”, and told talkSPORT that he “slows things down” in terms of his team’s tempo.
But some of his former teammates have disagreed with this stance, including Michael Owen, who said that he was “exciting to watch” and described him as “unbelievable” (cited by Goal).
Has Thiago been Liverpool's best player this season?
Supporters let rip at Hamann after @AnfieldEdition shared his comments on Twitter, and they really did not hold back.
Fans not impressed with Hamann
“The irony of one of the slowest crabs in our history having a go at Thiago’s urgency. The one player who plays passes fast is being accused of slowing things down. Hamann is an awful pundit.”
“Omd this is so stupid. Thiago was in the Bayern team every week for a start and to say he slows us down is ridiculous. He actually plays passes forward instead of sideways and backwards all the time like Gini”
“What nonsense. The guy was our best player in the 1st half yesterday and was constantly trying to move the ball forwards and find gaps in the packed defence. He provides the creative spark we need.”
“Deluded. Easily our best midfielder.”
“Hamann can’t really appreciate Thiago cos he rooted for Kai Harvertz a flop at Chelsea to come to Liverpool but JK went for the best in Thiago. Our front 3 are now toothless dogs but he can’t say anything about that. All he cared about is how Thiago slows things down.”
“So that’s John Barnes and Didi Hamann both saying Thiago slows us down. I’m genuinely gobsmacked. They were great players themselves, and it appears they’re a tad clueless here.”
