Liverpool identify Lucas Leiva transfer replacement

dejongThe Football Transfer Tavern has been rather quiet this evening, but the latest transfer speculation from The Independent has caused something of a stir in the bar.

The paper suggests that Liverpool are considering a move for AC Milan midfield enforcer Nigel De Jong after losing Lucas Leiva for the next two months with medial knee ligament damage, leaving the Reds looking short of defensive midfield cover.

The former Manchester City man has now emerged as a possible short-term replacement for Lucas at Anfield with the Reds boss reportedly ready to approach new Milan coach Clarence Seedorf about a possible transfer.

Italian reports indicate that Seedorf wants to keep hold of the Dutch international, who has started 18 of their 20 Serie A games this term, but Rodgers could still secure a surprise loan move with a sizeable bid.

De Jong would certainly toughen up the Liverpool outfit, after gaining a tough-tacking reputation during his three years at the Etihad Stadium.

With Rodgers certainly seeking additional back-up in his midfield, could he be the man to help secure Champions League football for the Anfield side?

Do you think that De Jong would be a suitable short-term fix for the Reds? Let us know your thoughts below.
